Fair Housing Conference on April 24
After 15 years, the Golden Triangle Fair Housing Conference is gearing up for another year of helping the citizens of Southeast Texas educate themselves about local jobs and home ownership.
The 16th annual Fair Housing Conference will be held in the Beaumont Civic Center on April 24 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. A free box lunch will be served with lots of door prizes waiting for those who attend, said Londie Jones, who is spearheading this year’s event.
“There will be workshops addressing such issues as how to finance a home, avoid bankruptcy, landlord and tenant rights, and solutions to tax problems,” Jones said in an e-mail.
The conference will also include educational seminars on a myriad of legal issues facing Southeast Texans, especially regarding home ownership and housing.
Although no daycare will be provided for those who have children, Jones said the educational opportunities for working mothers and low-income families are second to none.
“It’s open to everyone,” she said, “but who we target is definitely the low-income people because (Fair Housing’s) whole objective is to get people out of the projects and into home ownership.”
She said the conference also includes “credit counseling, first time home buyer’s assistance, lowering your energy bills, money management, how to lower the interest rate on your mortgage, information on available job training, who’s hiring, successful interview presentation, health care issues and so much more,” she said.
Door prizes will include a Kindle Fire and a big screen TV.
