Child drowns in local pool

Police say a young child drowned while swimming in a Beaumont hotel pool.

According to a BPD press release, first responders were called to the Super 8 Motel at  2850 I-10 East about 5:36 p.m. to find family members administering CPR to a four-year-old who had stopped breathing.

Beaumont EMS quickly took over CPR and rushed the child to St. Elizabeth Hospital where doctors were unable to save his life and was pronounced deceased at 6:32 p.m.

“We’re interviewing witnesses and other family members to try and figure out exactly what happened,” said BPD spokesman Rob Flores.

Police were still interviewing family members and those swimming at the pool in the hours and minutes before the child drowned, but Flores said Child Protective Services was called to assist police in the investigation.

“We notify CPS on any injury or death of a child,” he said.

The child was later identified as 4-year-old Torrell Malik Martin, of Beaumont. An autopsy was conducted Thursday, July 25 and detectives are still awaiting the results of that autopsy, Flores said.

As for how long the child might have gone unnoticed, Flores said investigators aren't jumping to any conclusions, as accidents in and around bodies of water during summer are common.

“It’s hard to say,” he said. “I think this is just a very heartbreaking reminder that tragedy could happen in a second, like when you’re around a pool. Parents need to keep a constant watch on children around any body of water.”
