More than $36,000 gross was raised at the annual Southeast Texas MDA Muscle Walk, held at the Montagne Event Center on Saturday, March 2 and presented by the Medical Center of Southeast Texas. Over 350 participants comprised of MDA families, local businesses, and community organizations were there to flex their fundraising muscles. Teams have been fundraising for several months now and March 2 was a celebration of all their hard work.
“We want to thank the community and the Montagne Event Center for their generosity in supporting MDA’s Muscle Walk,” said Anna Papoutsis, Executive Director. “It’s great to see our MDA families, area businesses and the public come together to make this event such a success.
The money raised in Muscle Walk donations will help speed MDA research seeking treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases. Also, it will help MDA provide a free summer camp experience to area children with muscle disease, as well as medical and health care services at MDA’s clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and the Methodist Neurological Clinic.
Top raising teams were – J. Mark Smith & Associates, Kappa Alpha Order, PNG-HOSA, ATG Custom Health Care and the Brock Group – each raising over $1,000.
Entertainment at the event included performances by the PNG Indian Singers; music by DJ Catalina Music and Sound; antics from local mascots – Geico Gecko, Chick-fil-A Cow, Chuck-E-Cheese Mascot, Sonic Cup Mascot, Big Ned from the Nederland High School, Westbrook High School Cheerleaders, and Texas Roadhouse’s Andy the Armadillo. Best Buy was also on hand demonstrating the X-Box Kinect with participants. Exygon provided Zumba instructors to help warm-up walkers before the walk. There were also poster making stations, face painters, cotton candy, and more.
Also, the event wouldn’t have been possible without sponsors – The Medical Center of Southeast Texas, Conn’s, Citgo, Kaplan College, Triangle Blueprint, ServPro of Orange/Nederland/Lumberton, KFDM and Clear Channel.”
