A new law aimed at reducing repeat drunk driving offenses and saving lives on Texas roadways officially goes into effect on Tuesday, Sept. 1, just ahead of one of the busiest traffic weekends of the year.

The law, signed by Gov. Greg Abbott on June 19, requires all drunk driving offenders to install an ignition interlock on their vehicles to have their driving privileges restored following an arrest.

As part of a broad effort to study the environmental and societal effects of climate change, NASA has begun a multi-year field campaign to investigate ecological impacts of the rapidly changing climate in Alaska and northwestern Canada, such as the thawing of permafrost, wildfires and changes to wildlife habitats.

At a meeting of the Beaumont Independent School District Board of Managers held Thursday, Aug. 27, roughly a half dozen citizens signed up to speak on the sale of district property currently up for proposals. However, due to a board policy currently in place, only one of the attendees was allowed to address the topic of concern.

That needs to change, Board of Managers President Dr. Jimmy Simmons said the following day.
