Area residents got to see firsthand how BPD officers train to confront armed suspects as part of the Citizens Police Academy on Thursday, May 2.

The 14-week course is designed to give residents of Jefferson County a hands-on look at everything officers do to protect and serve Beaumont.

Hundreds of women attended the Christus LiveWell Women’s Conference on Thursday, May 9, at the Ford Park Event Center to learn about women’s health, peruse various shopping booths and listen to the keynote speaker, singer/composer Jewel, who wowed the crowd with amusing anecdotes, sentimental stories and some of her most popular songs.

Sabine Oaks Home celebrated the dedication and generosity of Barbara Warren and her husband, Dr. Michael Warren, at the assisted living retirement community’s open house Thursday, May 9. The event, held annually to raise community awareness regarding the home’s services, offered a special reason to celebrate this year. Barbara, who is a member of the House Committee of the Sabine Oaks Board of Directors, and her husband, Michael, a biology professor at Lamar for more than 40 years, helped raise $5,000 for room renovations and beautification of the home.

In a meeting Wednesday, May 10, the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC) met to discuss a potential grant for the Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) Regional Police Academy and an update on Ike Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Housing Program, among other agenda items covered at the meeting.

The Beaumont Police Department hosted the 2013 Southeast Texas Police Memorial Ceremony on Wednesday, May 15.  This annual ceremony takes place on the front steps of our police station, 255 College.
