An 18-year-old Port Arthur man pleaded guilty Monday, May 13, to two counts of assault on a public servant after attacking two teachers in what the victims say was a violent and brutal display of aggression at Memorial High School in Port Arthur.

Although the turnout for Port Arthur elections wasn’t as large as 2010, which saw 4,241 total votes cast for mayor, the result was the same with the incumbent Deloris “Bobbie” Prince retaining her seat as mayor for a third straight three-year term. According to City of Port Arthur election result data, only 3,244 votes were cast for mayor in 2013 with 1,756 (54.13 percent) for Prince.

At their meeting Tuesday, May 9, the Orange City Council swore in two new members who are taking over the council seats for Districts 2 and 4.

Tommy Ferguson unseated District 2 incumbent Cullin Smith with the final vote tally standing at 353 to 224. Mary McKenna overtook incumbent Annette Pernell in a close race, winning by four votes with a tally of 148 to 144. At-large Councilman Bill Mello ran unopposed and joined the two newcomers at the swearing in Tuesday. A total of 882 ballots were cast.

The L.L. Melton Family Life Center on Sarah Street, currently operated by Jehovah Jireh — a nonprofit arm of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church — has a new benefactor who intends to help take the reigns and make the facility’s mission sustainable.
