From time to time, folks have asked what my favorite type of hunting is. Such a question does require some deep thinking. The only hunting that I did not enjoy was when I was first taken out snipe hunting at night.

Coming back to reality, I have always had wing shooting with ducks, geese and doves at the top of the list. Even quail and jacksnipe are great challenges, but at the very top is duck hunting.

The water temperature on Sabine Lake this past Monday was 69 degrees, and with this week’s cold front lowering temperatures into the 40s, it is a sure bet that water temps will drop at least a few more degrees. That’s going to give flounder fishing on Sabine Lake and in East Galveston Bay a big-time bump. The run on Sabine has been pretty darned good the past couple of weeks, but I can guarantee you it’s going to be red hot for at least the next week to 10 days.

The winners of the 2012 CCA STAR fishing tournament have been announced, and Southeast Texas anglers dominated the scoreboard and prizes.

There are many opportunities that are now taking place for both hunters and fishermen. Teal season will end this Sunday, Sept. 30, but dove season is open in both the central and south zones. The archery whitetail season opens annually on Oct. 1, followed closely by the regular waterfowl season and the regular deer seasons.

As we move into the latter days of September and with both dove and teal seasons going full swing, it is also time for some great fishing. Both freshwater and saltwater action will begin an upward trend only to peak in late October or early November. Those anglers that do their thing in late September get in on the fall action before those who wait. With the water becoming a few degrees cooler, there will be some of the best topwater action since the early springtime. This is the case on both the freshwater and saltwater scenes.

Last weekend’s teal opener was every bit as good as it was projected to be, and with the South Zone dove opener set for Friday, Sept. 21, this is shaping up to be one heck of a weekend to be outdoors with a shotgun.

Bobby and Alice Vaughan, who live just outside the Beaumont city limits, hunted a crawfish pond near China on Saturday’s teal opener and had quick limits for the entire family.

On Lake Sabine, many anglers have been reporting either hit or miss bird action or too many small fish. This is not uncommon for the early fall. Many times there will be huge schools of speckled trout and or sand trout, but the specks will be undersize. At least they are if the angler launches their boat in Texas.

It’s never too early to get into the deer-hunting mode in Texas. The bow-hunting season opens Sept. 29, and the regular gun season in 239 counties opens Nov. 3. And don’t forget about the kids. The Special Youth Season is open Oct. 27-28. One thing is certain – now is the time to start getting your deer hunting gear in order.

Dove season opened in both the central and north zones of Texas on Sept. 1. Teal season then opens in Texas on Sept. 15. There is a lot of interest hereabouts in both of these openings. In fact, several of the local outfitters had their dove hunts booked for opening weekend for several weeks.
