BBB carries a ‘Torch’  for retiring president

Lighting the torch … Anderson Ford Mercury in Cleveland and Operation Refuge Inc. of Cleveland are the winners of the 2011 Torch Awards for Marketplace Trust presented May 10 by the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Texas during its 14th annual awards presentation. The BBB Consumer Education Foundation Inc. made a $10,000 contribution to continue funding endowed Better Business Bureau College of Business scholarships at Lamar University, bringing total contributions for the past 14 years to $140,000. Channel 12 and Neches Federal Credit Unions each received this year’s recognition as the “Friend of the BBB.” Noted author and publisher of SUCCESS Magazine Darren Hardy held the audience’s attention as the keynote speaker. Retiring area BBB President Michael Clayton served as master of ceremonies and was recognized for his accomplishments with the BBB. Also announcing winners and finalists were Bill Leger, Larry Beaulieu, Jackie Simien, Kevin Steele, Ericka Harris, Patrick Vaughn, Jack Pieper and Gary Lee Love.

Sounds of summer … If jazz and groovy tunes are your thing, the Zachary Breaux Jazz Festival in downtown Port Arthur is for you. Swing high or low ... The 34th annual Babe Zaharias Golf Tournament at Brentwood Country Club begins at 8 on June 11. This commemorative annual event celebrating the life of one of the greatest athletes of all time, Babe Didrickson Zaharias, is especially important this year because it’s the Babe’s centennial. The four-person scramble is $600 perteam with prizes awarded for first, 10th and 15th place. Complimentary food and beverages will be on the course plus players get a tournament shirt and two entries to the dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn and Suites.
