Home and Garden

Have you ever planted roses? They are one of the most revered garden choices the world over. A short visit to our own Tyrrell Park Rose Garden will demonstrate just how well roses can grow here.

The charming old book “The Pleasures of Gardening” by Angela Stanford gives some fun history of the rose. Egyptian roses were shipped to Rome when the Italian roses were out of bloom. On Nero’s order, millions of rose petals were strewn in the streets during festivals.

My name is “Spot.” I am a 1-year-old female akita/shepherd mix. I weigh 67 pounds. I came to the shelter as a stray, and no one has claimed me. I am good with other dogs. I am a working dog and will need lots of exercise. My looks are a little intimidating, but my personality will melt your heart. Apartment living is not for me; I love the great outdoors with a big fenced-in yard with lots of toys. Please come and give me a good home.

My name is Sparky. I am a 2-year-old pit bull/Lab mix. I weigh 65 pounds. I am good with older children and other dogs. I am very sweet, lovable, and I love to ride in the car. I was brought to the shelter as a stray and no one has claimed me. Don’t condemn me because of my breed. I am not a fighter, just a lover. I can make a good pet for a loving family.

One flower that is not usually overlooked is the brightly colored sunflower. This cheerful giant is a beauty, partially edible and talented, as well. Did you know that the sunflower gracefully turns its head to follow the sun each day?

Yes, you can make your own fertilizers. The ultimate avid gardener recipe would be the recipe to make super good, organic fertilizers for your own use.

For some people, home gardening is an expensive pursuit. But at one time people gardened because homegrown produce was far better and cheaper than anything from the store. Any of the farmers of years ago knew, just like we know today, that to have healthy plants, you need healthy soil. An interesting Web site for “down home gardening” is backwoodshome.com.

Have you ever wanted a touch of Hawaii in your yard? The lovely plumeria will make you feel like you have just landed on the islands. What a beautiful fragrance!Any good flight to the island of Hawaii ends with the passengers departing the plane and someone putting a lei around your neck. That lovely traditional lei is strung with the blossoms from the ubiquitous plumeria plant.

Master Gardener Market Day is just around the corner! We all wait for it, so get there early on Saturday, April 16. They will feature plants that are adapted for our area. Many of the plants are in the EarthKind program, which means that they require little special care. Lots of vendors will be there who will offer a range of interesting products, even homemade cookies, links and drinks. In tandem, as always, is the Master Gardener Flea Market. Peek through for trash and treasures just waiting for you to take them home.

Hopefully you have begun your garden. Maybe most of your plants are in the ground. Maybe you have planted and things are beginning to grow. Now you need to maintain the space. Now is the time for watering, staking, mulching.

Seedling or seeds? Which is the best choice for your garden? It’s certainly easier to plant a vegetable garden by buying little plants and placing them gently into rich soil with your own green thumbs. Some seeds require planting in a protected place and transplanting and thinning. Some seeds are more trouble than others. The seeds that are super small or those that take months to mature from seed call for a gardener with a lot of patience. Choosing to use some seed in your garden will most likely add quite a bit more variety to what you have in your plot.
