Plant a free tree

Someone is giving away free trees? Jefferson County Master Gardeners, under the volunteer guidance of Glen Watz, will be giving away one-year old, bare-rooted seedlings to the local community. Get there early to get yours. The Campbell group is sharing trees with area residents on Friday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Jefferson County Master Gardener test garden at the Jack Brooks Regional Airport. Bald cypress, white oak, sawtooth oak, cherrybark oak and Shumard oaks will be available. Bags and instructions for care will come with your baby tree.

The tree giveaway isn’t the only business of Texas Agri-Life Extension agency this week. Come to the Agri-Life Extension Service Auditorium at 1225 Pearl St., No. 200, on the corner of Franklin and Pearl streets for a Vegetable Seminar this Saturday, Feb. 11. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program is planned for 9 a.m. until noon.

Paul Eyre, one of the featured speakers, will be discussing Root Vegetables and Leafy Greens. Eyre is a Jefferson County Master Gardener and vegetable specialist.Eddie Wharton is the other featured speaker at the seminar. Wharton will be speaking to the subject of Compost: Why, Where and When. Mr. Wharton is also a Jefferson County Master Gardener, citrus specialist and grower.

The Vegetable Seminar is sponsored by the Jefferson County Horticulture Committee. Tickets are $10 per person. For $1 more, you can buy a chance for a $150 composter that will be given away in a raffle at the seminar. Come enjoy the speakers and meet some new gardening friends.
