Q. My ex-wife and I signed a note to buy a car. Our divorce decree clearly says she keeps the car and she is obligated to pay the note. She has stopped paying and now the bank is asking me to pay because I also signed the note. What are my legal obligations?

A. Basically, a divorce decree is between the parties to the divorce. It does not affect existing creditors. In other words, you and your ex-wife have agreed that she will pay the note. As far as the bank is concerned, however, you both still owe the money.

The regular gun season on deer opens Saturday, Nov. 5. You know as well as I do that the opener will be here in a flash, and with that in mind I’ve put together a top five list of things to do before one of the most anticipated hunting days in Texas is here and gone.

Some time ago, I wrote about sources of free academic classes and free college textbooks. Since writing that column, the selection of free courses and textbooks have grown exponentially. Three of the major providers of free academic resources are Khan Academy, Flat World Knowledge, and Apple’s iTunes University.

Q. I co-signed for my ex-boyfriend’s truck. He recently filed bankruptcy and included the truck. The lender now says I have to pay. Doesn’t bankruptcy mean you don’t have to pay?

For a few years now, there has been a dramatic increase in online “deal” Web sites where subscribers can get bargains on a variety of products and services. These “deal a day” Web sites typically offer (for a fee) localized coupons or gift certificates good for dining, beauty services, auto repair, cosmetics, cosmetic dentistry and a variety of other goods and services. The defacto standard is “half price,” but I have seen discounts offered in excess of 90 percent.

I get a lot of requests from individuals on how to accomplish a myriad of tasks using popular software. I also get requests from individuals asking for help creating Web pages, or writing computer programs in a variety of computer languages. Now there is an unusual free resource that can give everyone detailed instructions on how to complete his selected tasks. While there are many free online help and tutorial services, what makes this one unusual is that it is mostly based on still images (screen captures), with only a small amount of text explaining each image.

Thank you to each of our Examiner readers who took the time to write, call or e-mail following last week’s article on the extreme behavior of a child that I witnessed first-hand in my home. I had hoped not to anger any parent, teacher or counselor of such a child, but to point out the severe need for parents to recognize the behavior and work to help these children reach their full potentials in life. Before letting the article go to be print, I sent a copy to one of the young mothers I trust so much in this field.
