Community leaders helped volunteers delivered more than 1,200 meals Oct. 17 as part of Nutrition & Services for Seniors fourth annual “Big Wheels” for Meals Day.Community leaders and business owners like Bo Alfred, Pat Avery, Larry and Justice of the Peace Nancy Beaulieu and many others volunteered to help ensure seniors get their lunch-time meal.

This was the second year Jefferson County Commissioner Alfred participated in “Big Wheels,” a service he says is a worthy cause close to his heart.

No one who has taken the time to listen to the public statements by the Director of the CDC Tom Frieden, MD, cannot be impressed with the mission, passion and expertise of the CDC. This dramatic and critical function of the CDC is newsworthy.

Lamar University has honored Jerry Lin, professor of environmental engineering, as the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer for 2014. “Chasing Quicksilver: From an Emperor’s Tomb to the Global Environment” will be the topic of his lecture, sponsored by ExxonMobil, to be presented Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre. The Lamar University Faculty Senate will host the lecture, which is open to the public without charge.

About the only thing this movie and the old television series have in common is the title. Replacing British actor Edward Woodward, who starred in the show that ran for four seasons beginning in 1985, is Denzel Washington, who teams up again with “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua for an updated take on the enigmatic character of Robert McCall.
