Monday, Sept. 1, was the Central Zone dove season opener, and as usual the success rate was all about being the right field at the right time. One of the best fields for the opener here in Southeast Texas was just west of Beaumont. That’s where a small group of hunters had an excellent shoot over a 50-acre field that had been cut last week. The doves moved in a few days before the season opener, and even though the field was soggy from recent rains, the birds wanted in.

Coming off one of the worst summer movie seasons in recent history, there is a lot riding on what’s in the pipeline for this fall. With a few exceptions like “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” nothing seemed to please audiences enough to send any movie over the elusive $300 million mark — a first in over 10 years.

Words are powerful things, no matter what the quote books say. “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” is simply not true. I know this from first-hand experience.

I often see people walking along a street, in a parking lot, or other location, who are busily using their smart phones, often oblivious to their surroundings. In law enforcement and the military, it is emphasized that individuals need to have “situational awareness” and be fully cognizant about what is going on around them, especially potential threats, at all times. Pedestrians who have their noses deeply buried in their phones are typically unaware of what is going on around them, making them easy targets for those miscreants who may wish to do them harm.

The good news is that dove and teal seasons will be open before you know it. The bad news is that our hunting and fishing licenses will expire on Aug. 31. That means a new license for 2014-15 is needed prior to going hunting or fishing.

Now that many of us are in back-to-school mode, it might be noteworthy to introduce a new, free product from Google for students and teachers, Google Classroom. Officially launched on Aug. 12, more than 100,000 educators from more than 45 countries had previously signed up for a functional preview starting last May. While Google is well understood to generate revenue through various forms of advertising, all of the components of Google Classroom (including Gmail) will not contain any advertising, but will still remain free for student and teacher use.

I learned a new word today — “gaslighting.” I admit I am fascinated by words and having used them for years to make my living, I am constantly amazed at new discoveries even at my age. My good friend, Rusty Cluck, is a wordsmith, though he won’t likely admit it to many. He comes up with some real winners from time to time, and I find myself looking for them in his writings. I wonder if Rusty has come across this word, which was new for me today.
