One way to beat the heat during August and September is to fish at night aboard

August is among the best months to be fishing the surf for trout and reds on the upper Texas coast. This past week was outstanding with calm winds, green tides and excellent catches of trout by waders and boaters in the surf from the Sabine jetties down to Galveston. Trout were best on topwaters early, then switching over to soft plastics like a 5-inch Egret Wedge Tail, in either chartreuse or pearl. Reds were best on gold spoons worked in the first gut on a green tide.

Dove and teal seasons are fast approaching with the Sept. 1 opener in the Centra

Opening day of the Central Zone dove season is Sept. 1, followed up by the Sept. 12 teal season and the South Zone dove opener Sept. 18. It’ll all be happening before you know it, and that’s why now – as in today – is a good time to start getting everything together.

Fishing on Sabine and Calcasieu lakes is gradually improving, even with water temperatures holding at a sizzling 89 degrees. Both of these “hot” fishing locations are producing fair numbers of trout and reds, along with one of the weirdest fish on earth – tripletails.

Dove hunters will have more opportunity earlier in the season with dates and bag

For many hunters here in Southeast Texas, September can’t get here fast enough. It marks the beginning of dove and teal seasons, and just recently the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service set season dates and bag limits that you are going to like.

The USFWS approved a 70-day dove season and a 15-bird daily bag limit. And thanks to record numbers of teal, we will have a 16-day early teal season.

Ron Jaap used a custom-built AR15 to take down this pig last weekend. The season

One of the great things about living in Texas is that there is always something to hunt or catch on any given day. For bow and gun hunters, taking a pig is one surefire way to add a little excitement to an otherwise boring summer.
