For the first time in many months, we’ve gotten enough rain to bring East Texas lakes back up to normal levels, and with that in mind there should be lots of people heading to places like Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. In the quest to convert your yard from a water-hungry (albeit lovely) sprawl of green St. Augustine grass to one which is less demanding, you could consider growing edibles in a portion of that space. I have long been a proponent of free software. Much of the free software available is often as good, if not superior to, its commercial competitors. Many of the free software products are written by altruistic individuals in order to solve a particular problem or to fill a specific niche, while many others are free versions of commercial software where the publisher hopes that the users will be so satisfied with the free version that they willfully upgrade to the paid version, which often offers additional features.

My friend and neighbor on Bolivar, Rusty Cluck, pulls some mighty big words out of his hat from time to time. I confess up front that I got this one and the idea for this column when reading something he wrote recently. He told a woman to “enjoy her schadenfreude,” and I wanted to be certain I understood what it meant. The woman writer has an overly offensive attitude and she is at her worst when writing.

The selection of Dr. Timothy Chargois as the new superintendent of the Beaumont Independent School District was greeted with a sigh of relief by beleaguered citizens who hoped the unanimous vote on the usually divided Board of Trustees signaled a new day at BISD. That might ultimately prove to be the case, but as Ringo Starr once sang, “It don’t come easy.”
