Finally the biggest event in Texas hunting is here – Saturday, Nov. 1, is the season opener on deer across the Lone Star state. It’s a fact that white-tailed deer hunting in Texas provides an opportunity for more than 800,000 hunters to go afield and harvest America’s most abundant big game animal. It’s also a fact that deer hunters annually contribute more than $2 billion to the Texas economy.

If you want a great place to spend next Saturday, Nov. 1, I have a suggestion for you! The Golden Triangle Rose Society is holding its Fall Rose Show at Tyrrell Park Garden Center at noon. They have invited the public to not only attend but to enter a rose in the contest Do you have a special rose in mind? Or you can just go and enjoy the Garden Center, which will be overflowing with the beautiful colors and fragrances of hundreds of freshly cut roses. How great is that!

Just to give you an example of how good the fast approaching gun season on deer will be, check this out. Bow hunters recently tagged two huge bucks. One taken in the Pineywoods scored 163 Boone & Crockett points. Another taken in South Texas scored 183 B&C points. That’s a good indication this deer season could deliver some outstanding bucks.

Community leaders helped volunteers delivered more than 1,200 meals Oct. 17 as part of Nutrition & Services for Seniors fourth annual “Big Wheels” for Meals Day.Community leaders and business owners like Bo Alfred, Pat Avery, Larry and Justice of the Peace Nancy Beaulieu and many others volunteered to help ensure seniors get their lunch-time meal.

This was the second year Jefferson County Commissioner Alfred participated in “Big Wheels,” a service he says is a worthy cause close to his heart.
