This feature based on John Le Carre’s best-selling 1974 novel puts the chill back into the Cold War, a period of world history worth revisiting if only to put current global politics into perspective. It’s also worth a trip to the cinema to see Gary Oldman in one of the best roles he’s ever enjoyed as George Smiley, the wily MI6 operative who must ferret out the double agent on the British payroll.

Racing to the finish line this holiday season, “War Horse” was predicted as the winner. The family-oriented film with a heartwarming story was indeed a sentimental winner with Steven Speilberg at the helm, but not the true winner among the three biggest, mass audience releases in the past two weeks.

Reflections in a social eye….Once again perusing the photo ops and ink generated by all the events over the past year brought about marvelous mems and smiles for this social columnist. So many of these memorable events were for charitable causes and came about due to the undying efforts of so many to strengthen our community. Between Santa, family and friends, my 10-year-old landed four new video games Christmas Day. When incorporating Wipe Out, Just Dance 3, etc. into the storage containers with all the other video games, it occurred to me that there are about 10 Wii, Xbox and Nintendo DS games that my gamer plays and another 45 plus that he doesn’t.
