After returning from an extended hiatus at the end of last year amid legal battles and public scrutiny, Port Arthur Independent School District Superintendent Johnny Brown announced his resignation from the job Thursday, March 28. Brown is expected to stay in his position until his contract expires in September 2014. He came to the district in 2006.

Two men are in custody after police say they were prowling a West End home in order to burglarize it.
Police responded to the 800 block of Shakespeare on Wednesday, April 3, about 11:52 a.m. to find a woman who told them two unknown men rang her doorbell and began prowling her garage.
“When we got there, we didn’t find him at the time,” said BPD spokesman Rob Flores “But officers continued to search the area and they found two males in the same vicinity.”
As officers interviewed the subjects, one man pulled what police described as a sawed-off shotgun on officers.

The litigation filed against Beaumont ISD in the 9th Court of Appeals to compel the district to follow the law and order the election the same Board of Trustees voted on at the Feb. 21, 2013, meeting has now turned into multiple lawsuits, letter writing campaigns and allegations of racial motivations from all sides. Wednesday night, April 3, a very upset relative of one of the trustee candidates called The Examiner and subsequently came to our offices with two letters.

Sexually oriented businesses, including strip clubs in Beaumont, might be getting a reprieve after a round of lawsuits against the city of Beaumont were dropped when the city moved to allow two such businesses to obtain a sexually oriented business license.

It’s not known as the most popular bass fishing lake in Texas, but truth be known, Lake Austin is an up-and-coming star when it comes to producing 13-pound-plus largemouth bass.
“Lake Austin continued to solidify its ranking as one of the best trophy bass lakes in Texas with Toyota ShareLunker 548, caught March 27 by Round Rock angler Colin Pack while fishing in a tournament,” said Larry Hodge with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Hodge reports that Pack caught the fish in 10 feet of water using a Carolina rig while fishing in hydrilla.
