The 2013 quarter horse season will begin Friday, April 26, at Delta Downs in nearby Vinton, La., with a first post time of 6:45 p.m. After this weekend, live racing will occur Wednesday-Saturday.

Opening weekend is full of action as April 26 will see two stakes races and two sets of trials for the Old South Derby with 18 horses competing in Races 4-5, and those with the Top 10 fastest times will move on to the May 18final.

For almost two years, the BISD board has known the will of the voters is to change from a 7/0 board to a 5/2 method of representation. Not something the majority on the board wanted, for certain, since they probably would lose some seats and certainly their ability to run the district like a monarchy.

From the beginning, their strategy was really quite simple: delay the change as long as possible and flavor the deliberation with well-orchestrated opposition. Next, pull out the race card.

Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams announced Wednesday, April 24, that the agency will be transitioning the way it rates school district accountability. According to Williams’ statement, the new 2013 state accountability system for school districts, campuses and charters in Texas will be based on four components, giving parents and taxpayers a more comprehensive overview of school district accountability. The first ratings under this system will be issued by the Texas Education Agency on Aug. 8.

The city of Port Arthur and a handful of companies operating within the municipality have entered into an agreement with the Department of Justice to pay more than $1 million in damages for their role in “releases of hazardous substances at the State Marine Superfund Site near the city of Port Arthur, Texas,” announced DOJ filings Tuesday, April 23. The announcement from the governmental entity now opens a 30-day public comment period on the allegations made by the DOJ or the resulting settlement with the alleged offenders.
