The Beaumont Independent Board of Managers approved a resolution that would satisfy new legislation enacted with SB 149 that requires schools districts to allow students to graduate who have failed end-of-course assessments during a meeting held Wednesday, May 27.

According to the bill’s text, school districts must provide “alternative methods for satisfying certain public high school graduation requirements, including the use of individual graduation committees.”

At 4:10 p.m., a 25-year-old Beaumont man crashed into the new HEB on College Street, striking a melon stand, Beaumont Police Sgt. Rob Flores reported on Wednesday, May 27.

According to Flores, the man is believed to have been the victim of a medical emergency, possibly a seizure.

Acting Big Thicket National Preserve Superintendent Edward Comeau announced on Tuesday, May 26, that due to significant storm activity and record-setting rains in the region, many of the hiking trails and paddling trails throughout the preserve are completely inaccessible and will be closed for approximately a week to ten days.

Sunday, May 24, a couple riding on a motorcycle was killed in the 1200 block of W. Park Ave. in Orange when they were struck by 29-year-old Travis Collins, who police believe to have been speeding and intoxicated at the time of the crash.

According to a report from the Orange Police Department, at 7:35 p.m. on May 24 officers were dispatched to a major traffic crash and found a 2012 white Dodge 2500 Ram 2500 truck resting on top of a 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle and two riders.

A 49-year-old man from Karachi, Pakistan, has been found guilty of being a member of a large-scale drug trafficking organization responsible for illegally importing and distributing millions of counterfeit, adulterated, and misbranded pills in the Eastern District of Texas and throughout the United States, U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced.
