Entergy Texas Inc. held its first annual Operation: Storm Ready, a hurricane preparedness event, at the Ford Park Exhibit Hall in Beaumont on Wednesday, May 29. The pre-season event was an effort to educate the public regarding emergency readiness and to show how Entergy is prepared for the worst.

In the latest twist to the ongoing Beaumont Independent School District redistricting saga, the governing Board of Trustees has voted to submit a new map for approved use in the next school board election that pads the population numbers of two districts with thousands of inmates from correctional facilities in the area although the felons housed therein cannot vote.

Visiting the emergency room can be a frightening experience, especially for a child. Many children are scared to go see a doctor, much more so the ER, and the accident or injury that prompts a visit to the hospital can be terrifying enough without adding to the equation an environment that is unfriendly to children.

I have some dear friends that are going through what some would term “tough times.” Each of them is hurting in different ways and needs a friend, helping hand, and kind words. I thought about the old adage, “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.” But then I asked myself, “Do we really want to be thought of by those we love as ‘tough people’?” I realize the word “tough” is relative, and I think I know what the writer of that little bit of sage advice meant, but I find I still question the meaning.
