Happy Mother’s Day to all those wicked stepmothers out there

When I was growing up in a lake community in rural Georgia, I was among the minority in my school classroom. Almost everyone I knew had a biological mother and father and maybe a brother or sister or two living in their family home. Mommy had married daddy, and they were all set to live happily every after, many of them in neat, white-framed or brick houses with perfectly matched picket fences and flower gardens.

June 15 fishing tournament to raise money for needy children

The fourth annual “Paying It Forward Fishing With Kids” Bass Tournament will be held June 15 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cassels-Boykin Park on Lake Sam Rayburn. Registration is open until June 13. The entry form, which includes the rules and requirements, is available on The Examiner’s website.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s ShareLunker Program has come to an end for the 2013 season. The nearest lake to the Golden Triangle to give up a 13-pound-plus bass during this season’s program is Toledo Bend. Feb. 15, Toledo Bend Reservoir gave up a 13.06-pound bass to Louisiana angler Casey Martin, who was fishing a tournament. Martin’s fish, now Toyota ShareLunker 543, was 26 inches long and 21 inches in girth.
