Feel like celebrating? The Beaumont Council of Garden Clubs will host an Annual Maypole Festival to bless the summer crops May 16. What a fun idea!

For those of you who knew Paula “Torchy” Salter, you know that she was a “feel good” spirit in our community. A group called “The Moon and Stars” is memorializing her spirit with the raising of a maypole in her honor on the grounds of the Beaumont Botanical gardens in Tyrell Park.

I was standing on the upper deck of a beautiful house built on Galveston Bay where a friend has a large collection of various palm trees wonderfully landscaped on his property. I have had a running love affair with palms since I began to write “Winds Over Bolivar,” a book about Hurricane Ike on the Bolivar Peninsula and its aftermath, where I used a beautiful palm that endured Hurricane Ike for my cover shot.

The United Steelworkers Union (USW), which represents workers at 65 U.S. refineries that produce approximately 64 percent of the oil in the U.S, called for work stoppage at nine U.S. refineries Sunday, Feb. 1 following failed negotiations in a national oil contract that expired at midnight Saturday night.
